Our 20 year-old front redwood deck was rotting and became hazardous. We wanted to replace the deck before this Winter’s El Niño which is predicted to be very severe. My partner and I met with Viking’s Senior Project Design Specialist Karen Skinner who was responsive to our needs and to our desire for a beautiful deck. Karen informed us that, with the company’s discount, we could also have our driveway redone. Karen was in frequent communication with us and included Gustavo, who supervised the construction. Two amazing craftsmen completed the project in three days’ time. The precision and quality of their work is exceptional. We are very pleased with our beautiful deck and driveway. Neighbors and passersby have been telling us how perfect our deck and driveway look (as well as thanking us for increasing their property values.) We are very satisfied with Viking Pavers and grateful for our beautiful front property.

To the amazing Viking Pavers crew—Karen, Gustavo, and Sam—I am so grateful I found you! This was our second time using their services, as they previously paved our driveway. Once again, they exceeded expectations. They have truly transformed the tiny backyard into an oasis that our family and friends will enjoy for years to come.Sam and his team took extra time and care to save and transplant our apple and lemon trees. On top of that, they even deep-cleaned our indoor area at the end of the project! Having Karen and Gustavo visit the site often was incredibly reassuring. Here are the before-and-after pictures of the driveway and backyard. I highly recommend Viking Pavers to anyone looking for a top-notch landscaper!

We are very happy with the patio installation by System Pavers! Brandon Varga was a great senior design consultant and he gave us a good price for the project. Very nice and very knowledgeable. Adrian, the project manager and his crew did an excellent job on our patio and free standing wall. Adrian is so easy and fun to work with, and all that on top of being an amazing and accommodating professional. Highly recommend their services! We will employ them again soon for other projects.

Karen from VP was great to work with, very accommodating and accessible. The paving was done beautifully and they even redid a small section to my specifications by getting different bricks to match what was already there. I’d use them again.

Viking did a great job on our front yard pavers project. Karen worked with us to make sure we got the look we wanted with the budget we were working with, and Gustavo and his team worked fast but made sure they did it right. They showed up when they said they would and finished the whole project in three days. Would recommend them highly.

I had a great experience with Karen discussing my initial thoughts on the scope of work. After discussion, we had plans for a new driveway, patio, and walkway. Karen was very helpful throughout the planning process. The install team was efficient too. I love the way the project came together.

Paver Patios

A great paver patio is an investment you can enjoy again and again. Our paver patios can be heavily customized to suit any kind of yard, any type of house, and any type of design. Whether you want a large and flexible patio for entertaining groups, a small and intimate patio for unwinding after a hard day of work, or a unique patio that supports your hobbies and lifestyle, we’re happy to do our part.

Our patios are also extremely easy to extend with walkways, built-in seating, built-in firepits, retaining walls, and a variety of other features. We work with perfectly flat yards, heavily sloped yards, and awkwardly-shaped yards that make other material options a challenge.

Paver Driveways

A paver driveway doesn’t just look better than a concrete one. It also performs better.

Believe it or not, paver blocks are four times stronger than poured concrete. That means they can withstand significant vehicular weight without any signs of wear and tear, which make them perfect for storing boats and RVs. And if your pavers ever crack, sink, warp, or otherwise fail, our team will come out and repair them for free. That’s the beauty of our 30-year labor warranties.

We also excel at installing paver driveways on sloped properties. Many homes in Moraga are built on hills or have strong inclines in their front yards, which can make it difficult to pour and maintain concrete. That’s just another place where pavers shine.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are usually installed for practical reasons, like terracing a sloped yard, holding back large amounts of earth, or providing protection from noise and road debris. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t also look stunning. Our retaining walls integrate seamlessly into your landscaping and hardscaping, providing all the structure of a regular retaining wall without the eyesore.

Planning a Hardscape Project Around Mature Trees and Landscaping

Many Moraga properties feature mature trees, established gardens, and thoughtfully designed landscapes that have developed over many years. When planning a new paver driveway, patio, walkway, pool deck, or retaining wall, it’s important to consider how the new installation will work with these existing features. At Viking Pavers, we take a comprehensive approach to hardscape design that balances functionality, aesthetics, and long-term performance.

Mature trees and landscaping often contribute significantly to a home’s curb appeal and overall atmosphere. During the planning process, we evaluate the property’s existing features and look for ways to integrate new hardscapes without disrupting the character that makes the landscape unique.

Every property presents different opportunities and challenges. Trees, garden beds, irrigation systems, and landscape elements can all influence the layout of a hardscape project. Careful planning allows us to design patios, walkways, driveways, and retaining walls that work harmoniously with the existing environment.

A successful hardscape project should enhance the usability of the property while preserving its visual appeal. Whether the goal is creating better access throughout the yard, expanding outdoor living space, or improving curb appeal, thoughtful design helps ensure that new hardscapes complement the surrounding landscape rather than compete with it.

Trees and landscaping continue to evolve over time. When designing a project, we consider how the property may change in the future and how those changes could affect the hardscape. Proper planning can help promote long-term performance while maintaining a balanced and attractive outdoor environment.

The best hardscape projects feel like a natural extension of the property. By carefully integrating pavers, retaining walls, walkways, and other features with existing landscaping, we help homeowners create outdoor spaces that are functional, visually appealing, and designed to complement their Moraga home for years to come.

“We wanted to replace our gravel, weed-filled ‘patio’ with a more substantial patio made of pavers.

First we spoke to a landscaper who was overly aggressive and keep trying to upsell us. Next we spoke to a gardener who would lay the patio for cheap, if we sourced the pavers ourselves.

But then came the obvious winner- Sophie from Viking Pavers! She is an expert who explained the value of working with an experienced paving company who will guarantee the patio for life. Sophie took the reins of our project and it was complete (& beautiful) in a matter of days.

Thank you to Sophie and Viking Pavers for a job well done!”

Sturdy Installations Need Firm Foundations

What’s the secret to a great paver installation? A great base.

At Viking Pavers, we depend on a generous application of road base for every project. Crushed stone, sand and gravel are painstakingly stabilized with a plate compactor to create a perfectly level surface that’s harder than a poured concrete slab. And then we build your paver project on top of that. That’s why our patios, driveways, and other paver projects consistently outlast the competition.

A Strong Finish

All of our paver projects are secured with polymeric sand, which is a sand and concrete blend that helps “glue” the joints together. Even for patterns without visible grouting, this step is absolutely crucial to ensure that the surface stays cohesive for years to come.

Other finishing options can also be applied, including stains and sealers. These sealants are more important for some projects than others: if you have a patio with a rich pigment that is exposed to direct sunlight, it might be a good investment. With so many options to choose from, it’s best to speak with one of our team members one-on-one to see if sealer is a good investment for your needs.

Designing Outdoor Spaces That Complement Moraga Homes

Moraga is known for its beautiful residential neighborhoods, mature trees, and well-maintained properties. When planning a hardscape project, it’s important that the finished design feels like a natural extension of the home and surrounding landscape. At Viking Pavers, we create custom outdoor spaces that enhance both the functionality and appearance of a property while complementing its unique character.

A successful hardscape installation should work in harmony with the home’s architecture, landscaping, and overall aesthetic. Whether we’re designing a paver driveway, patio, walkway, pool deck, or retaining wall, we help homeowners select colors, patterns, and layouts that blend seamlessly with the existing property.

Many Moraga homeowners want outdoor areas that support entertaining, dining, relaxation, and everyday family activities. Thoughtfully designed patios, walkways, and gathering spaces can help create a more functional backyard while improving the overall flow between indoor and outdoor living areas.

Many properties throughout Moraga feature mature trees, established gardens, and carefully maintained landscaping. During the planning process, we take these existing features into consideration to create hardscape designs that enhance the property without overwhelming its natural beauty.

An attractive outdoor space should also be practical and easy to use. We consider factors such as traffic flow, accessibility, drainage, and long-term maintenance when designing hardscape solutions. The result is an outdoor environment that not only looks great but also serves the homeowner’s needs for years to come.

No two properties are exactly alike. Whether you’re updating an aging driveway, expanding a backyard patio, renovating a pool deck, or creating a new outdoor living space, Viking Pavers develops custom solutions tailored to your home’s layout and your long-term goals. Every installation is backed by our 30-year labor warranty and built with lasting performance in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

First, it’s important to only source pavers from great manufacturers. There are plenty of material suppliers in the market that offer low-quality pavers that don’t sit clearly with each other, don’t offer consistent coloration, and don’t withstand impact damage. That’s why we only source from manufacturers who provide lifetime warranties on materials.

But beyond that, the sky is the limit. The best pavers for any project are the most appropriate pavers for the project. That means choosing materials and patterns that reflect the best version of your property.

Permeable pavers are designed to let water flow through them. This can be important for areas where drainage is important, such as flat surfaces where it could otherwise pool up.

Interlocking concrete pavers are exactly what they sound like: essentially, large puzzle pieces.

Paver services are basically a subset of masonry and hardscaping services. In other words, they are masonry—just a more specific kind of masonry.

Interlocking concrete pavers need remarkably little maintenance to look great for decades to come. At most, you might need occasional pressure washing, like any other outdoor surface. Re-sealing your pavers may also be necessary for a variety of reasons. For example, if your paver installation is near a stone fruit tree, those pigments can stain the pavers over time. But resurfacing and sealing them can put the problem to rest for years to come.

Paver Installation Throughout Moraga

Viking Pavers provides custom paver installation throughout Moraga, including neighborhoods such as Campolindo, Rheem Valley, and Sanders Ranch. We design each project around the property’s existing architecture, landscaping, elevation, and how the outdoor space will be used.

From paver driveways and patios to pool decks, walkways, steps, and retaining walls, our team considers the site conditions before construction begins. Proper grading, drainage, access, and foundation preparation are all part of creating a finished hardscape that looks right at home in the Moraga landscape.

Moraga’s Paving Code and What It Means for Your Driveway

Moraga has one of the more specific paving codes in the Lamorinda area: any driveway longer than 50 feet or wider than 16 feet is required by the Town’s own guidelines to be built of pervious paving materials — which happens to be one of our specialties. Add in the clay-heavy soil common throughout Rheem Valley and the Moraga Country Club area, and a standard poured driveway is often the wrong call here before permitting even enters the picture. Retaining walls over 3 feet also require a Town building permit, which we factor into hillside projects from the design phase rather than as an afterthought.

Our Paver Installation Process

Whether we’re installing a driveway, patio, walkway, pool deck, or retaining wall, every project follows a proven process designed to maximize durability, appearance, and long-term performance. Proper preparation is the foundation of every successful paver installation, which is why we never cut corners during construction.

We remove the existing hardscape material and excavate the area to a depth of
10” for driveways & 8” for walkways patios from final grade, removing all unstable
ground. Exceeding our competitors and ICPI standards.
Grades will be set for proper drainage, drain pipes, downspout tie-ins and future
lines will be installed. We install a GeotexTM fabric to stabilize the native soils and
prevent undulations in all areas. Exceeding our competitors and ICPI standards.
We install 4 5/8” or 6.5/8’’ for vehicle traffic areas of Class II base over the entire
paver area, which creates a stable yet flexible foundation.
Using a plate vibrator, we compact the class II base to a density of 98% to create a
firm foundation and eliminate the possibilities of sagging.
The area is evenly covered with 1” of specially manufactured bedding sand and is
smoothed out utilizing a screeding process. This sharp angled sand acts as a
cushion for the pavers and creates the interlocking mechanism system.
The stones of your choice are individually laid by our craftsman to create the
everlasting image of your dreams.
All edge stones are cut with a masonry saw, utilizing a diamond carbide blade.
This way we create clean, accurate edges for the desired shape of your project.

A concrete footing is laid around the edges to prevent lateral movement of the
sand set field stones. Border stones are then wet set on top of this footing.

The pavers are plate vibrated into the 1″ bedding sand to begin the interlocking
process.
Polymeric sand is swept and compacted into all paver joints. Which enhances the
interlocking process. and sets up like a flexible grout. We use polymeric sand on
all our installations as it is a best build practice.
One final time, the project area is plate vibrated to ensure the sand fills the entire
joints, and the pavers system is completely interlocked.

Merging Dreams With Craftsmanship

A paver patio or driveway isn’t just a material investment in your property—it’s also an opportunity to radically transform the look and feel of your space. At Viking Pavers, we never lose sight of that balance. All of our projects are designed to perform just as well as they look. And we might be biased, but we think they look pretty amazing.
