How Much Road Base Is Needed?
The amount of road base depends on how the finished surface will be used.
For most Viking Pavers installations:
- Driveways are excavated approximately 10 inches below finished grade.
- Patios and walkways are typically excavated approximately 8 inches below finished grade.
After excavation, the Class II road base is installed in layers and compacted to create a stable foundation before the bedding sand and pavers are installed.
Proper Compaction Matters
Installing road base is only part of the process. Proper compaction is equally important.
At Viking Pavers, the Class II road base is compacted to approximately 98% density. This helps create a stable foundation that supports the finished hardscape while reducing the likelihood of future settling.
